Cover Reveal!

Guess what?  UGLY DUCKLINGS FINISH FIRST, releasing August 5th from Carina Press, has its brand spankin’-new cover! *throws confetti*  (And yeah. I said spankin’ :P)

At first, I was going to make it another puzzle for the official reveal, like this:

But then it took me five freaking minutes to figure that shuffle puzzle out, so I had another idea.  I decided I’d rent out a stadium to show it off, kind of like this:

Then something terrible happened.  I realized I wasn't a billionaire.  *cries*

That was when I figured the best way to reveal the cover was to, y’know, reveal it.  So here you go—the cover of UGLY DUCKLINGS FINISH FIRST, the first book in an open-ended contemporary romance series set in the fictional town of Bitterthorn, Texas.  I can’t wait to invite y’all down to stay a while! <3

BLURB:

Metal Mouth. Queen Geek. Dr. Payton Pruitt heard it all growing up. But she's over it, and attending her ten-year high school reunion is the perfect way to prove it to herself. Even if there's only one person she's interested in seeing in Bitterthorn, Texas: Wiley Sharpe.

Now a respected lawyer, Wiley didn't live down to the label Most Likely to Be Slapped with a Paternity Suit. But recent acts of vandalism suggest someone still sees him as a heartbreaker, and the reunion seems a likely place to find the culprit. Instead, Wiley comes face-to-face with his old pal Payton—and is wowed not only by her transformation into a ravishing swan, but by the connection they still share.

Payton is pleased the playboy she used to tutor has grown into an honorable man, but she's too smart to fall for a guy with roots in a place she couldn't wait to leave. But while Payton is an academic genius, Wiley is the one with the PhD in pleasure, and he intends to use it to convince her to stay…

Just Write

My BuNoWriMo avie, created by the great
Joris Ammerlaan Design
The month of June has always been hugely busy.  For starters, it’s the traumatic changeover from school skating schedule to summer schedule, and for a couple of weeks I’ve got students showing up for skating lessons that have been rescheduled (or worse, I’m the one who’s got the schedule wrong *facepalm*).  There are long weekends at the beach, Father’s Day, graduations to attend, and always—ALWAYS—there’s at least one wedding or baby shower thrown into the mix.

But more than anything, there’s one thing I think of when I think of June.  BuNoWriMo.

BuNoWriMo was started by a group of talented writers who keep a blog called Burrowers, Books and Balderdash (or The Burrowers).  As rabid Harry Potter fans, they met online and found common ground in their love of both the HP series, and in writing.  This is how I met several of them long before The Burrow was officially founded (I’m not ashamed to let my HP-geek flag fly), so when they organized a month-long 50,000-word novel-writing sprint, I was thrilled to hop onboard.

What’s great about BuNoWriMo is that their rules are on the flexible side (yay for flexibility!).  They have the same belief that I do—if you’re writing, it’s allllllll good.  For instance, one year I wanted to write a novella (it was NOBODY’S ANGEL) that had to be around 35K words, and not the required 55K.

No problem.  Just write.

Other people have had to get epic amounts of editing done in this span of time.

Understood.  Just write.

This year, I’ve been so busy with slogging through the developmental edits for DANGEROUS ANGEL that I could barely get myself together. When I finally sent those edits off, I realized I’m in the middle of the first draft of the next Bitterthorn novel, SECRETS SO DEEP.  After I’m done with SSD, I’ve got another story lined up and ready to go, yet another Bitterthorn novel that’s going to need a ton of research before I launch into it. Normally, this would be an issue for a WriMo.

But it’s not a problem for BuNoWriMo.  I just have to write.  Every day, all I have to do is write.

That’s why I love BuNoWriMo so much.  It’s run by a bunch of people who aren’t all about following the exact rules or regulations that other WriMo events follow.  BuNoWriMo isn’t about rules and regulations.  It’s about putting your ass in your seat and making words every single day for one month, and at the end you have a shiny new book to show for it.  It’s painful, it’s maddening, and it’s totally doable.

Just write.

WOUNDED ANGEL Blog Tour, Plus an Excerpt!

Annnnnd, we’re off! WOUNDED ANGEL is on an excerpt blog tour, brought to you by GoddessFish—yay!  Follow along and enter at each stop, and you could win a $25 Amazon GC.  Here's where I'm headed:

What’s an excerpt tour?  Well, I took about a dozen or so snippets from WOUNDED ANGEL so that people could get a glimpse of what’s going on.  Teasers, if you will, to whet the appetite… kind if like this:

EXCERPT:

“Last chance to be smart and back out.” He pulled her close, and the fierce tenderness in the arms that held her warmed her more than their shared body heat. “I can’t tell you to hide out until it’s all over, because I know you won’t. I’ve finally figured out that hiding from a fight is something you won’t do.”

And she’d thought he would never learn. “Damn straight.”

“So I’m not telling. I’m asking.” As if he found the feel of her body irresistible when she was so close, he rubbed his hands over her back then, with a quick glance around the sparsely populated area of the pier, slid them lower to cup her bum. He massaged the rounded flesh until she could no longer feel the cold. “I’m asking you to stay out of this. Protect yourself like the irreplaceable treasure you are. Value yourself like I do, and let me do this on my own.”

See how that works? ;)

Also, since it’s June, I’m now engaged in BuNoWriMo big-time.  I’m hoping to get about 2K words daily (with a minor lull when I have family visiting) on a project I’d already started.  SECRETS SO DEEP is the third Bitterthorn, Texas book focusing on Chandler Thorne and the rebuilding of Thorne Mansion.  But there’s something hidden in the rubble of the once-great mansion, a secret no one even imagined was there.  I’m having such a great time with this story! :D

That’s it for now.  Happy reading!

Excerpt from WOUNDED ANGEL, Plus A Glimpse of DANGEROUS ANGEL

I’ve been bouncing in excitement over the release of WOUNDED ANGEL, while at the same time slaving away over edits for DANGEROUS ANGEL, the final book in The Earth Angels series.  Maybe it’s because of this that I’ve decided to show off a little bit of both books today.  Enjoy!

EXCERPT FROM WOUNDED ANGEL:

“It’s really not that big a deal.” But he limped in a pitiable way as he moved to the table. Hopping up wasn’t required. All he had to do was settle back onto it like it was no more than a barstool. “There’s no need to go to so much fuss, you know. You didn’t kick me that hard.”

“Yes I did, but that’s your fault, not mine.”

He blinked as she dug into the cart and came up with gloves for herself and a rolled-up, self-adhering elastic bandage for him. So much for trying to ease her conscience. “Excuse me?”

“You picked me up.”

“So?”

“So, I wasn’t expecting that.”

“I thought you said for me to give it my all or you’d kick my butt out of class.”

“All I wanted from you was a demonstration of a hold like a bear hug.” She turned to him as she removed the bandage from its package. “I believe my exact words were for you to put your arms around me. Not once did I say, ‘Toss me up into the air as if I’m a three year old.’”

“I didn’t want to do it in the first place, so I wasn’t exactly hanging on your every word.” And he hadn’t wanted to do it. Making like a nightmare that might lurk in this woman’s past rated on his Things To Do list just below setting his hair on fire.

Her huffy sigh carried a world of straining patience. “For purposes of teaching the basics of how to deal with an attack from behind, I needed a partner to act out the part, step-by-step. When you decided to improvise and show off how muscly you are with that hard body of yours, I hit the fast-forward button on the defensive moves and reacted instinctively. The result—no one really learned anything while I get to wrap up your knee like a mummy.”

Nate watched as she bent, caught his foot up, and wedged it between her knees. He froze while his imagination went wild as he stared at where they came into physical contact. With one move off the exam table, he could easily slide his leg between hers. He’d do it slowly, not to scare her but to entice her, and he’d enjoy the friction of it as his thigh parted hers, the slender columns of her legs sandwiching his in a warm embrace of need and hunger. He’d run his hands down her back to cup her lean little ass to encourage her to ride along the length of his leg. He wouldn’t stop as the warmth of the friction-created heat bloomed at the juncture of her thighs, and she would rock against him until that heat became an all-out blaze and she was moaning for more…

“…hurt you, I’m truly sorry for that.”

His skin flushed and tightened until he was the one who wanted to moan with the sweet pain of it. “You think I’ve got a hard body?”

Oh, Nate.  You silly man. ;)

The next little tidbit I’d like to share today comes from the project I’m editing now, so fair warning—it might not appear exactly like this in the final manuscript.  Here’s a small snippet between the heroine, Nikita Tesoro and a character introduced in WOUNDED ANGEL, Kyle (the hero in DANGEROUS ANGEL).

To set it up this scene… Kyle and Nikita, rival bounty hunters, have known each other for years and had been striking sparks off each other every step of the way.  Set in Miami, Kyle has dropped in unannounced while Nikita's topless-sunbathing on the roof of her RV, and it's made her, shall we say, a tad grumpy…

EXCERPT FROM DANGEROUS ANGEL (releasing 3/31/14):

Any pissed-off cat would have been proud of the hiss Nikita unleashed. “Why would I be asleep at this time of day? It’s almost noon.”
“Don’t you believe in naps? Wow, I don’t know if we can be friends if you don’t believe in naps. What are your thoughts on naps, now that we’re on the subject?”
She dragged a hand through the wild tangle of her ocean-salted, now-dry hair. When Kyle was in this bouncy-playful kind of mood, he was too delicious to be resisted. Her only defense against losing control over the situation could be just one thing—death threats. “Don’t make me come down there and kill you, cabron.”
“Did you know that with your hair flowing all over the place like that, you sort of look like my idea of a Cuban Rapunzel?”
ADHD, thy name is Kyle. “You know I don’t like to be disturbed. Remember that one night when you knocked on my window to bug me about catching that slimy wife-beating jump? Remember how I tased you for your efforts?”
“Yeah, that was a lovely little jolt of electricity you gifted me with. Made me so tingly I felt like I was walking on air. Or maybe that was just seeing you in a nightie.”
“I don’t wear nighties, I wear big T-shirts to bed.” Or nothing at all, but no way in hell was she going to let him know that.
“Are you sure?” His brows drew together doubtfully. “I distinctly remember a nightie with lots of frills and lace. You looked great in it, by the way.”
Oh, my God. “The way your brain works is one of the great mysteries of life.”
“Thank you.”
“It wasn’t a compliment."

WOUNDED ANGEL -- At Last, It's Here!!!

Yippee!  Finally, book three of The Earth Angels, WOUNDED ANGEL, releases today!  Better still, it’s also being released on Audible.com, as well as every platform known to man—yayyyy!

I’ve been so excited about WOUNDED ANGEL, because the hints that have shown up in the first two books of The Earth Angels, NOBODY’S ANGEL and SAVAGE ANGEL, all come together in the third book.  At last, the enemy is unmasked, a path is set, and the strength of love is tested.  Want to know more?  Here’s the blurb and link to the opening scene!

Book three of The Earth Angels

A descendant of the Angel of Vengeance, Nate da Luca was gifted with an uncanny ability to find things. It made his job as a detective a breeze--until he learned the hard way that some things should remain hidden. After that, his powers vanished, along with his belief in himself. Which is going to make tracking down Gabriella Littlefield for his latest client a challenge.

Personal trainer Ella Little paid a hefty price for her life--now all she wants is to live it in peace. Then a sexy hulk of a man turns up in her gym, reigniting desires she thought she'd left behind along with her real name and hair color.

Desires she can't deny even after she discovers Nate's no stranger to her dark past.

Before he can convince her the attraction is mutual, Nate's going to have to earn Ella's trust. But a demon is playing for keeps in the world of humans, using Ella as bait, and the last thing they have is time...

Go back to the beginning with Nobody's Angel, available now!

The Secret Is Out--FINALLY!

Do you have any idea how bad I am at keeping secrets?  No one talks to me during the month of December; they all know I’ll blurt out Christmas secrets without meaning to.  I don’t mean to be a blabbermouth—it’s just that I'm extremely truthful.  So, imagine how uncomfortable I was when I got the fab news my military homecoming holiday novella, A CRAVING FOR COOKIES, had been accepted at CarinaPress, with one teeny request from CP’s executive editor, Angela James:

Don’t tell anyone.

The effect was instantaneous. I came down with the worst case of diarrhea of the mouth the world had ever seen.  Suddenly I wanted to tell EVERYONE.  People online.  People at work.  Random people in the street.  To make matters worse, this wasn’t an ordinary contract being offered.  Oh, no.  A CRAVING FOR COOKIES represents my 10th contract since I got published in 2011.  My TENTH, dammit!  I considered hiring a frigging sky-writer to let the whole world know!

But I didn’t.  I kicked myself off Twitter and FB the moment I received that wondrous acceptance email on April 16th.  I barely said a word to anyone for ten long days (this was easier than I’m making it sound since I had to get my skaters ready for a competition); it was entirely possible my online buddies forgot I existed.  Then, on the 26th, Angela made the official announcement—yay!  At last I could talk about it.  I was happier than Dobby the house elf when Lucius Malfoy presented him with a sock. *squeals “Dobby is freeeeeee!”*

This means I can also talk about how much I loved the letter Angela sent me.  Acceptance letters are always a beautiful sight as far as I’m concerned, but this one really got to me.  What was it that she said?  Well…

I think this is your best book so far, and you know I've loved your others.

*sniffle* Those are words that can make a grown writer cry.  So bring on those editorial notes, I’m ready to hit them as soon as I get back from RT Con (I’m leaving tomorrow *bounces*)!

Unofficial blurb for A CRAVING FOR COOKIES:

Bitterthorn, Texas might not be big enough for baker Lucy Crabtree, now that her ex-husband is back in town in time for Christmas. From Lucy's senior year in high school, she and Sullivan Jax had been inseparable, dreaming of happily-ever-after. Little did Lucy know that when Sully entered the Army Rangers to serve and protect his country, that decision would kick off the beginning of the end.

In hindsight, Sully supposed the second tour of duty he’d volunteered for hadn’t been the best idea he’d ever had.An IED—or improvised explosive device—scrambled his brains and left him finishing up his military service in various hospitals stateside. But all things considered, he had it luckier than most.He was still in one piece and had either relearned or recalled the majority of what his old life had been. There were only two nagging issues hanging fire—the complete loss of memory when it came to a blue-eyed, smart-mouthed woman everyone said had once been his wife, and an insatiable craving for cookies.

Sully had wanted to do right by Lucy, and insisted on setting her free. But now that the divorce is final and he’s back in a town so small they can't avoid each other, his craving for cookies is taking a backseat to his craving for Lucy. But will the pain of being forgotten and a past he can’t remember keep them apart? It might take a special cookie—and some Christmas magic—to bring about the happily-ever-after they’d dreamed about so long ago.
